Not. In. Our. Name.ack Kelly's column yesterday in the Blade, "Stop pretending in Afghanistan":
The war in Afghanistan is not going well. U.S. casualties so far this year are already higher than in any of the previous seven years of our involvement there. President [Mr. Fmr. Jr. Sen.] Obama[teur] is considering a request from Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the new U.S. commander in Afghanistan, for an additional two to four brigades on top of the 65,000 U.S. troops already in the country....
Afghanistan was supposed to be the good war....
If he accedes to General McChrystal's request, he will own the war in Afghanistan in the same way Lyndon Johnson owned the war in Vietnam....
But as we learned in Vietnam, more troops are not a substitute for a well-thought-out strategy....
To continue as we have in Afghanistan will be to suffer defeat at maximum possible cost, as we did in Vietnam....
And "Present"
Betray-us Øfascist has had over 228 days in which to capture or kill al-Qaeda's terrorist-in-chief Osama bin Laden. But here, too, he's been a dangerously
incompetent, wrongheaded, quagmire-creating, terrorist recruitment-aiding,
miserable failure.
