Tell the people exactly what they want to hear, but go on doing exactly what you want to do.f a serious crisis is, as Former Jr. Senatard Øfascist's chief of staff deputy führer Rahm al-Emanuel believes, something you "never let go to waste" because "it's an opportunity to do things you couldn't do before," then why just sit around and wait for one to materialize? Why not instead give yourself that opportunity early and often by purposefully creating such crises?
Start by playing on people's superstitions.
Mankind's greatest superstition of all is that what's new and different is always better. It's based on the belief that all our lingering problems are the result of "old ways of thinking and old ways of acting"; so they "just won't do." The trick here is to convince people that, first, you had nothing to do with creating those problems and, second, your ways of thinking and acting to solve them are new and different. In short, Hope™ and Change®.
Next, enlist a willing and able lapdog media to help you constantly play down or cover up your culpability while allowing you to constantly play up or exaggerate that of others.
Although you had every motive (© 2008 al-Emanuel), means (© 1966 Cloward & Pliven), and opportunity (© 2008 Soro$) to create a crisis that solely benefits you and your accomplices, someone else must be blamed for it.

Joseph Goebbels could speak from hell, no doubt he would advise you to tell everyone over and over again that you
"inhereted this crisis." Your intent, of course, is to keep people from noticing that the biggest, fattest hand in creating it is
your own. In short, SODDI (some other dude did it).
Trying to pass off your "solutions" to the crisis as new and different is, however, more problematic. After all, you really aren't interested in solving anything: No crisis, no "opportunity to do things you couldn't do before." And there are lots and lots of such things.
So what do you call ways of thinking and acting that have been tried over and over again but have always failed miserably? "Communism"? No, that's so last century. "Fascism"? No, that might derail a cherished meme. "Socialism"? Warmer, except America's very existence is based on not ever being again another stifling or stifled part of Europe.
How about "Universalism"? as in Universal "Education" (aka Restrict Thought), Universal "Health Care" (aka Reduce and Ration), Universal "Wealth" (aka Repress and Redistribute), Universal "Immigration" (aka Rescind Borders), and overall Universal "Government" (aka Everlastingly Enslave Everyone Else)? Has a nice ring to it, but still lacks the left right kind of punch.
"Progressivism" or "Collectivism" or "Alinskyism"? MEGO (my eyes glaze over).
"Yeswecanism"? "Changeweneedism"?
"Hope - you - won't - discover - we - have - absolutely - no - idea - what - the - hell - we're - doing - ism"?
No matter. You can always come up with a name you think feel just positively screams "New!" and "Different!" later.
The fact that your so-called change has been, all in all, for the dramatically worse could be cause for despair. Not because that's something everyone with at least half a brain was entirely able to predict. But because everyone else — i.e., your supporters — expected you to make everything all better. If they're to remain your supporters you have to re-enlist that willing and able media of yours to help sell them on the Big Lie™ idea that "we and everyone else misread the economy." No doubt they'll buy it. After all, they were the ones who voted your dangerously incompetent selves into office, weren't they?
If that fails, too, you can go back to blaming others. The only problem here is coming up with an answer that totally ignores the fact you now enjoy a complete lock on all power. Thus how can it be any of their fault? But don't worry, your loyal lapdog media will allow you to pin it all on them somehow.
Besides, it means there's another serious crisis.
You know, a new "opportunity to do things you couldn't do before."
