Power. Without it, nothing matters. Having it means doing whatever you want, when you want, and especially making others do what you want. Up to a point. The more power you have the more you can do and make others do. In a liberal's case, nothing else matters.
Without the enormous amount of power needed to negate a liberal's lack of true competency and useful ideas, as well as his more personal shortcomings, he is exposed to having to give account for his many mistakes and be responsible for their consequences. Because the liberal places little value on thinking, being incapable of bringing himself to exercise even a minimal effort in that regard, he relies on feelings, chance, and chicanery to manipulate in his favor an otherwise dismal outcome. That end justifies, for him, every means.
To a liberal, having power reduces that constant, paralyzing fear he has of being found out as the liar and fraud he knows he is. With power he can crush anyone with relatively less power who tries to make an issue of any of his failings. The more people he has power over the better. That means he can do as he pleases, mess up as many lives and things as he wants in the process, without having to worry about someone later holding him accountable for the destruction he caused. Power is the liberal's drink. But whatever amount he has, it is never enough to quench his thirst. He has done more wrongs which only his wielding more power can keep him from being caught and finally stopped.
That is why liberals admire and work to protect tyrants and dictators. They envy the seemingly absolute powers these brutes have. They are the liberal's role model, a living example of what heights of unaccountability are possible. Toppling those despots or changing their regimes puts fear in the liberal's heart. It means that even they - the ones who have more power than he had ever imagined or hoped to see anyone possess - can be brought down and forced to face the stark reality of their deeds, too. It is what all liberals fear most. Why they must preserve the sense or even the illusion of absolute power so in the event they ever seize it, it will matter. The only way a liberal can get away with his incomprehensible irrationalities is by making all others much more afraid of him than he is of them. And the only way he can do that is by possessing unchallengeable power.
